How to Save TikTok Videos to Your Phone (and Why the Button Is Sometimes Missing)

TikTok has a built-in “Save video” option - when the creator allows it. Here’s how to use it, how to keep videos without downloading, and why the option sometimes disappears.

Save TikTok videos - The right way

TikTok lets you save many videos straight to your phone, but not every video can be downloaded. Here’s how it works.

  1. Open the video.
  2. Tap the Share arrow on the right side.
  3. Tap Save video.

The video is saved to your gallery or camera roll. Downloaded videos include a TikTok watermark with the creator’s username, so the original creator is always credited.

Keep videos without downloading: Favorites

If you only want to watch something again later, tap the bookmark icon (or press and hold the video and choose Add to Favorites). Favorites are private and live in the bookmark tab on your profile. They don’t use phone storage.

Why is “Save video” missing?

The download option can be unavailable for several reasons:

  • The creator turned downloads off. Creators can control this in Settings and privacy › Privacy › Downloads, or per video when posting.
  • Younger users’ videos. TikTok doesn’t allow downloads of videos posted by younger teen accounts.
  • Music or licensing limits. Some sounds can’t be included in downloads in some regions.
  • Private accounts and restricted content.

If the option isn’t there, the respectful choice is to keep the video in Favorites or ask the creator.

Save your own TikTok videos

  • Before posting: in the posting screen’s settings, turn on the option to save the video to your device.
  • After posting: open the video, tap ⋯ or the share arrow, and choose Save video.
  • Drafts are stored inside TikTok only. If you uninstall the app or change phones, drafts can be lost - save important ones to your device first.

A note on downloader websites

Sites and apps that promise to remove TikTok watermarks or download any video often break TikTok’s terms, may carry malware, and remove the credit creators rely on. Stick with the built-in options.

Using downloaded videos

Downloading a video for yourself is different from reposting it. If you want to share someone’s video on another platform, use TikTok’s share options or ask the creator for permission, and always credit them.
