How to Use WhatsApp Status to Sell More: A Practical Guide for Small Businesses
For many small shops and service providers, WhatsApp Status is the cheapest advertising channel they have. Here’s how to use it well - without annoying your customers.

For a lot of small businesses, WhatsApp Status works like a free daily shop window. Customers already open WhatsApp many times a day, and a good status can turn into a chat - and an order - in minutes.
These tips work in both the regular WhatsApp app and the free WhatsApp Business app.
Step 1: Make sure customers can actually see your status
Statuses are only visible to people who have saved your number and whom you have saved. That’s the single biggest limit on your reach.
- Ask every customer to save your number - print it on receipts, bags and your shop sign with “Save this number to see our daily offers”.
- Save customers’ numbers too, with a clear name (e.g. “Asha - Customer”).
- Check Status privacy is set to My contacts (or My contacts except… if you need to leave a few people out).
Step 2: Use WhatsApp Business features
If you sell regularly, switch to the WhatsApp Business app. It adds a business profile (address, hours, website), a catalog for your products, quick replies for common questions and labels to organise orders. Your status links customers back to all of this.
Step 3: Post content people want to see
Good business statuses are useful, not just adverts:
- New arrivals - clear photos in good light, one product per status.
- Price and availability in the caption: “Size 40-44, TSh 35,000, 6 pairs left”.
- Behind the scenes - your workshop, a delivery on its way, a happy customer (with their permission).
- Short videos showing the product in use.
- Simple offers with a deadline: “Today only - free delivery in town”.
Step 4: Write captions that get replies
Every status should tell people what to do next:
- “Reply 1 to reserve.”
- “Swipe up and send your size.”
- “Tap the link to see the full catalog.”
Replies to a status arrive as a normal chat with a thumbnail of the status, so you always know which product they mean.
Step 5: Post at the right rhythm
- 3-6 updates a day is plenty for most shops. Dozens of updates in a row make people tap past - or mute you.
- Spread them out: morning, lunchtime and evening are when many people check their phones.
- Statuses last 24 hours, so a daily rhythm keeps you visible without repeating yourself.
Step 6: Keep copies of your best statuses
Your statuses are content you can reuse. Save your own updates from My status › ⋮ › Save before they expire, and keep the originals of your product photos in an album so you can post them again later or add them to your catalog.
What to avoid
- Don’t post other businesses’ photos as your own.
- Don’t add people to broadcast lists or groups without asking - it leads to reports and blocks.
- Don’t promise what you can’t deliver; one bad review travels fast in local WhatsApp groups.
Quick checklist
- Customers know to save my number
- Status privacy is set to My contacts
- Every status has a price or a clear next step
- I post a few times a day, not dozens
- I keep copies of my best updates
